Reaganomics Supply-Side Economics

Reaganomics Supply-Side Economics

Understanding Supply-Side Economics by David Harper,CFA, FRM (Contact Author Biography) Reaganomics (a portmanteau of "Reagan" and "economics") refers to the economic policies promoted by United States President Ronald Reagan. The four pillars of Reagan's economic policy were to:[1] reduce the growth of government spending, reduce marginal tax rates on income from labor and capital, reduce government regulation of the economy, control the money supply to reduce inflation. In attempting to cut back on domestic spending while lowering taxes, Reagan's approach was a departure from his immediate predecessors. Reagan became president during a period of high inflation and unemployment (commonly referred to as stagflation), which had largely abated by the time he left office.

Supply-side economics is better known to some as "Reaganomics", or the "trickle-down" policy espoused by former U.S. president Ronald Reagan. He popularized the controversial idea that greater tax cuts for investors and entrepreneurs provides incentives to save and invest and produce economic benefits that trickle down into the overall economy. In this article, we summarize the basic theory behind supply-side economics.

Like most economic theories, supply-side economics tries both to explain macroeconomic phenomena and - based on these explanations - to offer policy prescriptions for stable economic growth. In general, supply-side theory has three pillars: tax policy, regulatory policy and monetary policy. However, the single idea behind all three pillars is that production (i.e. the "supply" of goods and services) is the most important determinant of economic growth. The supply-side theory is typically held in stark contrast to Keynesian theory, which, among other facets, includes the idea that demand can falter, so if lagging consumer demand drags the economy into recession, the government should intervene with fiscal and monetary stimuli. This is the single big distinction: a pure Keynesian believes that consumers and their demand for goods and services are key economic drivers, while a supply-sider believes that producers and their willingness to create goods and services set the pace of economic growth. The Argument That Supply Creates Its Own Demand In economics we review the supply and demand curves. The left-hand chart below illustrates a simplified macroeconomic equilibrium: aggregate demand and aggregate supply intersect to determine overall output and price levels. (In this example, output may be gross domestic product and the price level may be the Consumer Price Index.) The right-hand chart illustrates the supply-side premise: an increase in supply (i.e. production of goods and services) will increase output and lower prices.
Starting Point
Increase in Supply (Production)

Supply-side actually goes further and claims that demand is largely irrelevant. It says that over-production and under-production are not really sustainable phenomena. Supply-siders argue that when companies temporarily "over-produce", excess inventory will be created, prices will subsequently fall and consumers will increase their purchases to offset the excess supply. As put by the Fountainhead Capital Group, "After all, what would cause consumers and businesses to stop demanding goods and services and force the economy into a recession or a depression? Keynes had no idea, and said as much…." This essentially amounts to the belief in a vertical (or almost vertical) supply curve, as shown below on the left-hand chart below. On the right-hand chart, we illustrate the impact of an increase in demand: prices rise but output doesn't change much.
Vertical Supply Curve
An Increase in Demand → Prices Go Up

Under such a dynamic - where the supply is vertical - the only thing that increases output (and therefore economic growth) is an increase in the production of the supply of goods and services. As illustrated below:
Supply-Side Theory Only an Increase in Supply (Production) Raises Output

Three PillarsThe three supply-side pillars follow from this premise. On the question of tax policy, supply-siders argue for lower marginal tax rates. In regard to a lower marginal income tax, supply-siders believe that lower rates will induce workers to prefer work over leisure (at the margin). In regard to lower capital-gains tax rates, they believe that lower rates induce investors to deploy capital productively. At certain rates, a supply-sider would even argue that the government would not lose total tax revenue because lower rates would be more than offset by a higher tax revenue base - due to greater employment and productivity.

On the question of regulatory policy, supply-siders tend to ally with traditional political conservatives - those who would prefer a smaller government and less intervention in the free market. This is logical because supply-siders, although they may acknowledge that government can temporarily help by making purchases, they do not think this induced demand can either rescue a recession or have a sustainable impact on growth. The third pillar, monetary policy, is especially controversial. By monetary policy, we are referring to the Federal Reserve's ability to increase or decrease the quantity of dollars in circulation (i.e. where more dollars means more purchases by consumers, thus creating liquidity). A Keynesian tends to think that monetary policy is an important tool for tweaking the economy and dealing with business cycles, whereas a supply-sider does not think that monetary policy can create economic value. While both agree that the government has a printing press, the Keynesian believes this printing press can help solve economic problems. But the supply-sider thinks that the government (or the Fed) is likely to create only problems with its printing press by either (a) creating too much inflationary liquidity, or (b) not sufficiently "greasing the wheels" of commerce with enough liquidity. A strict supply-sider is therefore concerned that the Fed may inadvertently stifle growth by contributing to deflation and encouraging investors to horde dollars. What’s Gold Got To Do with It?Since supply-siders view monetary policy not as a tool that can create economic value, but rather a variable to be controlled, they advocate a stable monetary policy or a policy of gentle inflation tied to economic growth - for example, 3% to 4% growth in the money supply per year. This principle is the key to understanding why a supply-sider often advocates a return to the gold standard - which may seem strange at first glance. (And most economists probably do view this aspect as dubious.) The idea is not that gold is particularly special but rather that gold is the most obvious candidate as a stable "store of value". The supply-sider argues that if the U.S. were to peg the dollar to gold, the currency would be more stable, and fewer disruptive outcomes would result from currency fluctuations. As an investment theme, supply-side theorists say that the price of gold - since it is a relatively stable store of value - provides investors with a "leading indicator", or signal for the direction of the dollar. Indeed, gold is typically viewed as an inflation hedge. And, although the historical record is hardly perfect, gold has often given early signals about the dollar. In the chart below, we compare the annual inflation rate in the United States (the year-to-year increase in the Consumer Price Index) with the high-low-average price of gold. An interesting example is 1997-98: gold started to descend ahead of deflationary pressures (lower CPI growth) in 1998.

Conclusion Supply-side economics has a colorful history. Some economists view supply-side as a half-baked economic theory - economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman even called its founders "cranks" in a book dedicated to attacking the theory ("Peddling Prosperity"). Other economics are so utterly disagree with the theory that they dismiss it as offering nothing particularly new or controversial to an updated view of classical economics. We have discussed the three pillars, and, based on this, you can see how the supply side cannot be separated from the political realms: if true, it implies a reduced role for government and a less progressive tax policy.

Two Wolves - Cherokee Words of Wisdom

Two Wolves - Cherokee Words of Wisdom
Two Wolves - Cherokee Words of Wisdom

Two Wolves - A Cherokee Parable
An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life... "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. "One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego. "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. "This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The old chief simply replied, "The one you feed."

Two Wolves - Cherokee Words of Wisdom

Personal Message: "It is as if there are two wolves inside me; One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way. He saves all his energy for the right fight."

Why I Support the McCain-Palin 2008 Campaign

Comments from James Everitt
The McCain-Palin Campaign and the rest of our ticket for reform are ready to serve our country. With your help and support, we can make this happen on November 4th. Stand with us now and join our team. Sincerely, James Everitt http://www.johnmccain.com/

Why John McCain

Early on in his life as a midshipman at the Naval Academy, the most important lesson John McCain learned was that to sustain his self-respect for a lifetime it would be necessary for him to have the honor of serving something greater than his self-interest -- service to his country. John McCain has always put his country's interests before any party, special interest and even his own self-interest. He has always and will always do what is right for our country.
John McCain has a strong record of working across the aisle to reform how business is done in Washington. Throughout his career of public service, John McCain has worked across party aisles with Republicans and Democrats alike to reform our campaign finance system, confirm qualified judges like Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sam Alito, and enhance our homeland security. He spoke out against his own party's out-of-control spending, against the Administration to change a failing strategy in Iraq, and against an energy bill that was full of giveaways to Big Oil companies.

To keep our nation prosperous, strong and growing we have to rethink, reform and reinvent: the way we educate our children; train our workers; deliver health care services; support retirees; fuel our transportation network; stimulate research and development; and harness new technologies.

Under a McCain presidency the United States will experience robust economic growth, and Americans will again have confidence in their economic future. A reduction in the corporate tax rate from the second highest in the world to one on par with our trading partners; the low rate on capital gains; allowing business to deduct in a single year investments in equipment and technology, while eliminating tax loopholes and ending corporate welfare, will spur innovation and productivity, and encourage companies to keep their operations and jobs in the United States. Doubling the size of the child exemption will put more disposable income in the hands of taxpayers, further stimulating growth.

Under a McCain presidency the United States will be well on the way to independence from foreign sources of oil; progress that will not only begin to alleviate the environmental threat posed from climate change, but will greatly improve our security as well. John McCain has proposed a comprehensive energy plan - the Lexington Project - that will lower the price of gas while utilizing every energy source to move us toward energy independence. He believes we need to develop advanced alternative energy sources while developing existing energy sources by drilling offshore, expanding nuclear power and encouraging clean coal technologies.
Under a McCain presidency health care will become more accessible to more Americans than at any other time in history. Reforms of the insurance market; putting the choice of health care into the hands of American families rather than exclusively with the government or employers; walk in clinics as alternatives to emergency room care; paying for outcome in the treatment of disease rather than individual procedures; and competition in the prescription drug market will wring out the runaway inflation once endemic in our health care system.

Finally to secure the peace for future generations, John McCain will end the war in Iraq with victory and bring our troops home with honor. John McCain hates war. And he knows very personally how terrible its costs are. But he knows, too, that the course of immediate withdrawal in Iraq could draw us into a wider war with even greater sacrifices; put peace further out of reach, and Americans back in harmâ??s way. John McCain will also win the war in Afghanistan by increasing the size of forces there and adopting a true counterinsurgency strategy, much like the one that has been successful in Iraq that John McCain advocated. He will continue to hunt down al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.

John McCain has the strength to keep America safe and the courage to secure the peace.
There are many public causes where service can make our country a stronger, better one than we inherited. Wherever there is a hungry child, a great cause exists to serve. Where there is an illiterate adult, a great cause exists to serve. Wherever there are people who are denied the basic rights of Man, a great cause exists to serve. Wherever there is suffering, a great cause exists to serve. John McCain has spent his life serving our country and will continue to work with anyone who sincerely wants to get this country moving again. He will listen to any idea that is offered in good faith and intended to help solve our problems, not make them worse. He will seek the counsel of members of Congress from both parties in forming government policy before asking them to support it.

From the day he is sworn into office until the last hour of his presidency, John McCain will work with anyone, of either party, to make this country safe, prosperous and proud.

Citizens for McCain is an organization within the McCain campaign for people who put country before political party and support the candidate for President who has a proven record of bipartisanship.

"I have worked with John McCain for many years in the U.S. Senate and know from experience that he can unite Democrats, Republicans and Independents like no one else in this country. He did it in the United States Senate and he can do it as President of the United States. Thank you for your willingness to help me expand this new organization. Together, we will make history.
Joe Lieberman"

If you want to learn more about this important effort, visit http://www.dividedwefail.org/.
Thank you for your time and efforts. I look forward to hearing from you in regard to Divided We Fail and whether or not you have signed the Congressional Pledge.
Understand the problem. See the solution. Insist that your government gets the message and just does it. It really is that simple. See our site and white paper at http://www.usenergyindependence.com/ and http://www.americanenergyindependence.com/
I believe that our elected officials have the political resolve to pass a comprehensive energy independence legislation bill before the 2008 elections. But will they take the high road and set aside their political differences in a joint bipartisan effort to do what all Americans deserve from their elected officials? Americans are facing some of the most important economic and energy issues in the history of our country. We need to contact our elected officials and tell them that we want a united effort from them to come together and resolve their differences. Our founding fathers had their different political views and they helped create a government of the people by the people, the greatest nation on earth the United States of America! It's up to the 300 plus million people of America to take our government back from those 545 elected officials and fix our current economic situation!

Why You should care about Energy, Personally.

First there are the environmental effects. Second there is the moral imperative to do what is right for humanity. But, beyond all that, how does it strike home to You, Now ? Everything that Exists, Depends Totally on Energy.

That is the real point. People run on energy, from their food. They die without it. Birds, Animals, Fish, and all other living things run on energy. Farms run on energy. Tractors use fuel. Fertilizer needs energy to make it. Transportation systems run on energy. Businesses run on energy. Homes run on energy. Everything runs on energy ! So What Happens if there isn’t enough ? It is simple. First we give things up. We go without. Our quality of life declines. You don’t buy things, because you spent your money on gasoline, heating oil, and electricity. No new jeans. No trip to Disneyworld. Hamburger instead of steak. Those are the things that happen first. Then it gets worse.

You can’t drive your car. You have to move into a smaller house near the city and take mass transit. You have to be colder in the winter. You have to be hot in the summer. You have to turn the lights off. The poorer people suffer much more. They have inadequate food. No heat. They freeze to death or suffer heat stroke. Huge numbers of jobs are lost. Businesses fail by the hundreds. Then it gets catastrophic. We go to war with whomever, to take their energy. Hundreds of thousands die in a futile effort. Millions die of starvation and disease. The veneer of civilization is stripped away and it is dog eat dog.

Why can’t we just do the simple things; use Bio-diesel, Conserve, Switch to Compact Fluorescent Lights, Hydrogen, and all that ? Its simple again. There is not enough farmland to grow enough crops for ethanol and Bio Diesel sufficient in quantity to make up for all the fossil fuels used just in transportation, not to mention all the other uses. We need food first, and most of the farmland has to be used for that. We can conserve, but each day more people are born. This increases the need. The need increases faster than conservation can save. And besides, once the fossil fuel is gone, its gone. It does not matter how many miles per gallon the car gets if there is no gasoline. Hydrogen is not an energy source. On the contrary, to free up hydrogen atoms into the form needed for fuel, we must use energy first. No energy available to make hydrogen? Then there is no hydrogen fuel.

So are We Doomed ? No. There is more than enough renewable energy potentially available to meet our total needs thousands of times over. And it won’t run out. Ever. So we do the things outlined in our white paper, and life improves immeasurably. Millions of new jobs are created. Wealth increases dramatically. The climate is saved. People prosper. Security is enhanced. War is averted. No one has to die fighting for oil. So read the white paper. Understand the problem. See the solution. Insist that your government gets the message and just does it. It really is that simple. See our site and white paper at http://www.usenergyindependence.com/.

Will we be disconnecting from the power grid or even selling power back to the electric company? We're about to find out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgQXYBRYwbg

The MEG Generator is an electromagnetic device without moving parts, which includes a permanent magnet and a magnetic core. The core includes two circuits (magnetic paths) which are alternatively pulsed in order to provide induced current pulses in the output coils. Driving electrical current through each of the input coils reduces a level of flux from the permanent magnet within the magnet path around which the input coil extends. The pulsing is critical, in accessing the Zero-Point Energy, and in using The Fifth Element aspect of repeatedly getting into the system for energy extraction and out again before it has to pay the energy conservation price.

The inventors -- which include Thomas E. Bearden -- claim a coefficient of performance (C.O.P.) of five or more. This C.O.P. is effectively an efficiency, but one which is allowed to exceed unity. (The idea of a C.O.P. was originally developed for use with heat pumps, which yield energy in the form of heat which is several times that of the electrical energy input -- but where the additional energy is acknowledged to come from the earth’s heat.)

The MEG Generator has received a great deal of Inter Net publicity, but precious little from the mainstream media. The paper on the device has appeared on numerous websites, only to be removed. Currently, the only available access is via the Naudin website which provides a convenient link http://jnaudin.free.fr/html/meg.htm to “The MEG paper : Extracting Energy from a Permanent Magnet with Energy-Replenishing from the Active Vacuum”, http://www.cheniere.org/, by Thomas E. Bearden, et al.

Meanwhile, from: , Bearden is quoted as saying: “Heaviside and Poynting independently and simultaneously discovered ElectroMagnetic (EM) energy flow, in the 1880s after Maxwell was deceased. It is known that, from the terminals of a generator (from the source dipolarity, once created), there pours out a continuous stream of EM energy flow, filling all space around the conductors of the external circuit. Poynting's theory considered only that component of this external energy flow that is intercepted by the external circuit and diverged into the conductors to power [the circuit].

“Heaviside, on the other hand, included not only that ‘caught’ component, but also included the remaining component that is not intercepted by the external circuit, but misses it and is wasted. The wasted energy flow is orders of magnitude greater than the energy flow caught. However, this meant that from every generator there already pours out far more EM energy than the amount of mechanical shaft energy input to the generator --- and that is indeed true. Since no one could explain what could possibly be furnishing such a torrent of excess energy, obviously there was a bit of a problem with the law of energy conservation as it was understood at the time.

“Since then, the broken symmetry of opposite charges --- such as the opposite charges on the ends of the source dipole, once formed between the generator terminals --- has been proven in particle physics. In short, now it is known (in particle physics, not electrical engineering) that the source dipole, once formed, continually absorbs virtual photons from the seething vacuum [the Zero-Point Energy], transduces (coherently integrates) it into real observable photons, and pours out that torrent of real, observable photon energy streaming from those generator terminals. This is the solution to the problem that so puzzled Heaviside and so vexed Lorentz, goading him into creating a neat little trick to get rid of the problem itself.

“Unable to solve the problem of the source of that enormous EM energy flow from the terminals of every generator or battery, H.A. Lorentz, who understood the work of both Heaviside and Poynting, reasoned that the excess nondiverged Heaviside energy flow component had "no physical significance" since it did not power anything. So Lorentz integrated the energy flow vector around a closed surface assumed around any volume element of interest.

“This little trick arbitrarily and neatly disposed of all accountability of the bothersome Heaviside component, while retaining and accounting the Poynting energy flow component. All EM textbooks and electrical engineering to this day repeat Lorentz's integration trick, and dutifully (and arbitrarily) dismiss that Heaviside component. It is still present in every field/charge reaction and outside every electrical circuit, since the Bohren experiment proves its existence, and is readily replicated at any proper university laboratory.

“So the irony is that electrodynamics and electrical engineering -- as they are still being taught in university --- arbitrarily dismiss this very large nondiverged, nonreacting component of EM energy surrounding every field/particle reaction. Even the EM fields are misdefined in terms of what is diverged or wrenched out of them -- a gross non sequitur. My point is that every EM interaction involves far greater EM energy than is presently accounted for, since Lorentz discarded that huge Heaviside non-diverged component.”
Basically, the MEG Generator allegedly captures this Heaviside component.
This free energy device was patented on March 26, 2002 (US Patent Number 6,362,718 -- which can be verified at http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html. mailto:wmorgan@nycap.rr.com reports that production should begin in 2003. Morgan goes on to write an excellent description of this extremely newsworthy event. His e-mail message has received is given below:

“A patent was granted on March 26, 2002 for "The Motionless Magnetic Generator," MEG) US Patent 6,362,718, which is likely to become the first commercially available free energy device in history in about one year from now. The machine will provide free electricity from the vacuum, for the life of the device, which should be a very long life since it has no moving parts. You can see a picture of scientist Jean-Pierre Naudin's MEG replication model at: http://jnaudin.free.fr/html/meg.htm.

It has strong magnets, coils, and a controller unit with the electronics. Naudin made the announcement to the MEG-builder's Yahoo group. The announcement has significance since the patent office has always been skeptical of devices which seem to ‘get-something-for-nothing.’ But according to the new science of scalar electromagnetics, the MEG doesnot break the law of conservation of energy. It's just that the energy is conserved in the fourth dimension, time, and not our 3-space world.

The MEG provides electrical energy by tapping the longitudinal electromagnetic (EM) waves which exist in almost infinite abundance in the vacuum of space. This ocean of energy which permeates everything is sometimes called the ‘zero point’ energy, since it remains there even at absolute zero temperature.
Four inventors are listed: Stephen L. Patrick, Thomas E. Bearden, James C. Hayes, Kenneth D. Moore.

Tom Bearden has explained the operation of the MEG http://www.cheniere.org/, and also speaks about the new fearful weapons that can and have been made using the same ‘longitudinal waves’ of the vacuum.

The complicated physics of how the MEG works is explained in the Paper ‘The Motionless Electromagnetic Generator: Extracting Energy from a Permanent Magnet with Energy Replenishment from the Active Vacuum,’ which can be found at Tom Bearden's website; http://www.help4all.de/energy/MEGpaper.pdf.”
[Currently, http://jnaudin.free.fr/html/meg.htm is the only place where the paper can still be accessed. But this accessibility continues to be in a state of flux.]

“The first MEG units to be produced for sale will output 2.5 kilowatts of free electricity. Forever. They should be in production about a year from now. Facilities for manufacturing the device are being set up in an unnamed ‘friendly nation.’

This free electricity will flow indefinitely, without much, or any maintenance. The units may be hooked together to provide more wattage, so four of them would provide 10 kilowatts. After some production experience units will be made which output 10 kilowatts each. With a couple of those units a house could get off the electrical grid.

Tom Bearden, one of the inventors has said, ‘I will admit that the chief scientist of an important experimental group in a large company was rather stunned at the type of output we were able to obtain. The MEG may look like just a transformer, but it is not. It is a completely different breed of cat.’ This cat, it would seem, is out of the bag now. The ordinary EM waves we are familiar with are called ‘transverse’ waves, to distinguish them from the new ‘longitudinal’ EM waves of the vacuum.

Bearden has explained in depth on his website cheniere.org that wherever there is a dipole (battery, generator, magnet) there is an unseen flow of longitudinal EM waves in that local vacuum, the only problem is in tapping that energy and ‘transducing’ it to electricity. Bearden says that the problem with all the electrical circuits we have is that they are two-wire circuits, a loop by which half the energy goes back to destroy the dipole. In the MEG that closed loop is never made. So the dipole is not being destroyed.

Patents are not granted on devices which do not work, so in a sense this announcement proclaims a new era. The MEG device itself proclaims and proves that energy is abundantly available everywhere, for free. We only have to build the devices to tap it. MEG type devices could be put into a car with an electric engine to make a truly fuel-less automobile. Electricity can be available in very remote places. People will be able to get off our very terrorist-vulnerable power grids. In an era of terrorism a highly dispersed power system would be most desirable rather than our centralized systems.

What is somewhat astonishing to me is the discovery by Bearden et. al. that Time itself is actually compressed energy, and that this free energy is actually coming from the time domain, the ocean of longitudinal EM waves which fill the empty vacuum of spacetime. In fact, time is energy compressed by the same factor that matter is compressed energy: the speed-of-light squared. Thus there is a new companion to Einstein's E=mc2. Can you say ‘E equals delta-tee-cee-squared?’ The ‘tee’ is time and delta-tee is change in time.

A company has been set up to manufacture the MEG called Magnetic Energy Limited.
The New Energy Ramifications are enormous. The oil wars are not necessary. If we threw as much money at this technology as we are spending on the oil wars we would be free of the need for oil in less than a decade. With fuel-less cars air pollution will be greatly lessened. Third world nations can raise their standard of living eventually. And the energy is free. And it never runs out.
http://www.prahlad.org/pub/bearden/scalar_wars.htm is a "Bearden for Beginners" article which explains some of the basic concepts of the current state of scalar technology.
The granting of the MEG patent is the herald of the new era of Scalar Electromagnetics, and the free energy which flows forever and never runs out.”

Automotive Initiatives for a Cleaner Planet?
I reference a couple of points here that could lead to an entirely new paradigm concerning automotive design. - It is indicated that several times in history water has been found to be a satisfactory source of power through efficient extraction of its component gases. See, for example, www.waterfuelmuseum.org Do not consider this mere rumour, Genepax in Japan are indeed experimenting with a water-powered fuel cell vehicle. - The inefficiencies of current automotive design and, until recently,… Continue

Tidal Energy
In a recent Slashdot article (see link) researches in the UK have developed a way to generate electricity from the tidal motion using a snake-like device dubbed "Anaconda." Initial tests have proved its feasibility, and are looking to produce a full scale "Anaconda" measuring 7m in diameter and reaching a length of 200m. They would be deployed in water 40-100m deep and generate a fairly impressing 1MW (enough to power app… Continue

Green, Kansas
A wind farm to light and power the city. There is a cable channel that is devoted to "Green" and is showing professionl guidence to the town leadership in rebuilding "Green" after the tornado wiped out the town. Would be excellent way for people to see what wind power can provide for, Green, Kansas, and maybe their town.

JFK Speech on Secret Societies and Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech is being able to speak freely without censorship. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under international law through numerous human-rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, although implementation remains lacking in many countries. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes preferred, since the right is not confined to verbal speech but is understood to protect any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country, although the degree of freedom varies greatly. Industrialized countries also have varying approaches to balance freedom with order. For instance, the United States First Amendment theoretically grants absolute freedom, placing the burden upon the state to demonstrate when (if) a limitation of this freedom is necessary. In almost all liberal democracies, it is generally recognized that restrictions should be the exception and free expression the rule; nevertheless, compliance with this principle is often lacking.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Amendment I, The Bill of Rights

Democratic Candidate
Cap-and-trade program for greenhouse-gas emissions
Fuel-economy standards for automobiles
Renewable energy
Biofuels
Coal
Nuclear energy
Barack Obama interview, fact sheet
Supports a cap-and-trade system to cut U.S. emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. Would auction off 100% of emission credits, making polluters pay for the right to emit greenhouse gases. Is a cosponsor of the strongest climate bill in the Senate, the Boxer-Sanders Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act.
Supports raising standards to 52 mpg by 2026.
Calls for getting 25% of U.S. electricity from renewables by 2025. Calls for 30% of the federal government's electricity to come from renewables by 2020. Proposes investing $150 billion over 10 years in R&D for renewables, biofuels, efficiency, and other clean tech.
Calls for 60 billion gallons of biofuels to be produced in the U.S. each year by 2030.
Supports "clean coal." Supports coal-to-liquid fuels if they emit 20% less carbon over their lifecycle than conventional fuels. Says he would use "whatever tools are necessary to stop new dirty coal plants from being built in America -- including a ban on new traditional coal facilities."
Has said we should explore nuclear power as part of the energy mix, but has also said nuclear is not a great option because of problems with safety and storage and because it usually requires big government subsidies.

Republican Candidate
Cap-and-trade program for greenhouse-gas emissions
Fuel-economy standards for automobiles
Renewable energy
Biofuels
Coal
Nuclear energy
John McCain interview, fact sheet
Supports a cap-and-trade system to cut U.S. emissions 60% below 1990 levels by 2050. Would give away many emission credits at the start of his plan, instead of making polluting entities pay for the right to emit greenhouse gases, though down the line he would phase in auctions of such credits. Would allow domestic and international offsets as a form of compliance.
Supports raising standards, but has not named a specific target. In 2002, introduced legislation that would have raised standards to 36 mpg by 2016.
Supports renewables, but has not offered specific targets.
Supports increased use of biofuels. Opposes subsidies for ethanol.
Supports coal power and wants to find cleaner ways to use coal.
Supports nuclear power as a way to curb global warming and boost energy independence. Calls for subsidies for the nuclear industry.

Independent Candidate
Cap-and-trade program for greenhouse-gas emissions
Fuel-economy standards for automobiles
Renewable energy
Biofuels
Coal
Nuclear energy
Ralph Nader interview, fact sheet
Supports a carbon tax instead of a cap-and-trade program, but hasn't released details of his plan.
Supports raising standards. In 2000 and 2004, called for increasing standards for cars to 45 miles per gallon and light trucks to 35 mpg, to be phased in over five years.
Supports solar, wind, tidal, and other sources of renewable power.
Has voiced support for "biomass" as one good source of renewable energy, and also included biomass as part of his energy policy plan when he ran for president in 2004.
Has advocated moving away from coal power and halting subsidies to coal mining. Has also disparaged mountaintop-removal mining and criticized the Bush administration for what he says is its lax approach to coal-mine safety.
Opposes nuclear power.
